What does Additional Precautions mean?

Additional Precautions are used when a person has an infection that can spread to other patients, visitors, or staff in the health care setting.

How will I know if the person I am visiting is on Additional Precautions?

There will be a coloured sign placed on the patient’s door advising of the Additional Precautions. 

What do I do if the person I am visiting is on Additional Precautions?

Follow the instructions outlined on the signs. Depending on the type of Additional Precautions, you might have to wear personal protective equipment such as a gown, gloves, or a mask.
